Steel Pipe Road Crossing

Project: Strategic Alliance Water Pipeline Elsham to Lincoln

Client: Anglian Water

In spring 2023, DMJ was awarded the easement works package as part of the installation of a new pipeline to carry drinking water from Elsham to Lincoln.

Issue

Shortly after starting work on the project, the client asked DMJ to assist with installing a new 800mm diameter steel pipe under a busy road in preparation for the valve works to be installed ready to connect to the mainline pipe. The installation work had to be completed within the road’s two-week permitted closure period.

Solution

DMJ mobilised its extensive range of plant and machinery to ensure every eventuality was catered for during the two-week work window. DMJ located five key services during the operation, including gas pipes and fibre optic cables. While proving the existing services, four unchartered services were found and identified. These services included an old cast iron water pipe. DMJ’s attention to detail and skilled team ensured that none of the services were damaged during the project.

With the trench opened, two excavators lowered the 28 metres of pipe into place. DMJ’s team had to take extra care when handling the pipe as its hyper hygiene had to be maintained to ensure it was not contaminated.

In the project’s final phase, levels were checked, the pipe suitably backfilled, and the road re-tarmacked and opened up to the public ahead of schedule.
