Cable route haul road

Project: Viking Link Cable Route Hall Road

Client: Balfour Beatty

DMJ won the contract for easement works on the UK side of Europe’s largest HVDC cable project, which ran from Denmark to Bicker Fen in Lincolnshire. Due to the desired completion date for the project, all year-round working was required. As such, unrestricted access to the site was needed, which was achieved by installing a stone haul road throughout the project. The haul road was removed on completion of the project, and the materials were recycled.

Issue

As part of the project works, 30km of haul roads were required to facilitate the transportation of the cable onto site. The total weight of the cable and transportation 2 3 trucks weighed in at 105 tonnes, so the quality of installation had to be exact to ensure the roads held firm.

Solution

DMJ imported over 84,000 thousand tonnes of aggregates to install over 32,000 metres of haul road incorporating geotextile and geo-grid membranes to ensure rigidity to the road. The safe and timely delivery of the cables to site without any incidents was a testament to the quality of work delivered.
